PATA Malaysia Taylor’s Student Chapters hosting a virtual forum on ‘Budget 2022 and the Revival of Tourism Sector’

 

Malaysia, 15th November 2021 - PATA Malaysia Taylor’s Student Chapter (MTSC) and the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events (SHTE) organised a forum on Budget 2022 and the Revival of Tourism Sector: Are we heading in the right direction? Last 15 November 2021. This virtual forum aimed to provide a platform for industry players to share their views on Budget 2022, particularly relating to its relevance to the tourism industry. In line with this, five key industry players from Hospitality, Tourism and Events and Ernst & Young Tax Consultants Sdn. Bhd.

The forum started with the Opening Address by Professor Dr. Neethiahnanthan, Executive Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Leisure Management and followed by the forum session. SHTE is honoured to have Adjunct Professor Anthony Wong, Group Managing Director, Asian Overland Services Tours & Travel Sdn. Bhd as the moderator for the session. SHTE would like to thank Adjunct Professor Anthony and the panel speakers, Mr. Francis Teo, President, Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) and Head of Convention Centres, Setia City Convention Centres; Mr. Mohamad Halim Merican, Chief Executive Officer, UniQ Hospitality Services; Mr. Nigel Wong, Honorary Treasurer, Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) and Mr. Asaithamby Perumal, Partner – Tax, Ernst & Young Tax Consultants Sdn. Bhd.

The forum was insightful and covered discussions relating to whether the budget will help the industry, what is the wish list of the industry and what is the weakness of the budget. One interesting point highlighted during the forum was that the allocation of budget for the tourism industry was less than 5% of the total Budget for 2022. The virtual forum was ended at 5.30pm with closing remarks by Dr.Shantini (Programme Director of Postgraduate Programmes School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events). Around 140 audiences from various industries (including education, travel, tourism, events, and healthcare) joined and actively participated in this virtual forum. They asked several constructive questions to the panel speakers. The insights shared by the speakers make this virtual forum as a fruitful session for all the audiences.
