Lao National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (LANITH)

PROFILE

Project LAO/020 is a bilateral development project support by official development assistance (ODA) from the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for the benefit of the people of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).  At the national level, LAO/020 is being implemented in collaboration with the Lao National Tourism Administration and the Lao Ministry of Education.

The project aims to strengthen human resources in the hospitality and tourism industry in Lao PDR by formulating a national human resource development (HRD) strategy for the sector, improving teacher quality, updating national curricula and constructing the Lao National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (LANITH) which will serve as a national centre of best practice. 

According to research recently conducted by LAO/020, it is estimated that an additional 23 000 direct employees will be demanded by the tourism sector by 2020.  In order to contribute to these significant human resource needs in the tourism sector, the LANITH will serve as many as 450 full time students who will be enrolled in a two-year diploma programme in hospitality and tourism with four choices of major: Rooms Division; Food and Beverage Production; Food and Beverage Service; or Travel and Tourism Operations. 

In addition to full time study, the LANITH will organize part time training for a cross section of the estimated 18 000 people currently employed in the sector.  The LANITH complex will open in January 2012 and will consist of four distinct operations:

(i) a hospitality and tourism educational institute fully equipped with practical training labs;

(ii) a fine-dining restaurant;

(iii) a fully integrated meeting facility with capacity of 250 persons theatre style; and

(iv) a 75-100 room 4-5 star commercial hotel.
