

Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier of the second most populous country in Southeast Asia, possesses a great opportunity for development. Carrying nearly 10 million passengers and achieving revenue of USD 1.5 billion in 2009.
With current fleet of over 58 aircraft, mainly including Boeing B777s and Airbus A330/321/320s, Vietnam Airlines expects to expand its modern fleet to 104 aircraft by 2015 and put 150 aircraft into operation by 2020. To pursue its ambitious fleet expansion plan, Vietnam Airlines has signed purchase and leased contracts for almost ninety new aircraft, which include twenty ‘Dreamliner’ B787s, forteen new generation A350-900s, four A330-200, thirty seven A321-200s and eleven ATR 72-500s.
Vietnam Airlines currently serves 20 domestic cities and 42 international destinations (including code-share services), with future plans including flights to Los Angeles, London, Shanghai, Bombay, New Delhi, Jakarta, Rangoon and Far Eastern Russia. At the moment, its international route network connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to major world cities including Moscow, Paris, Frankfurt, Beijing, Guangzhou, Sydney, Melbourne, Seoul, Pusan, Osaka, Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Manila.
In April 2009, Vietnam Airlines and SkyTeam signed a preliminary agreement confirming the airlines’ first step towards full membership into the SkyTeam alliance. The agreement outlines Vietnam Airlines’ intentions to undertake exclusive discussions to become a part of SkyTeam during the year 2010. “The agreement reaffirms Vietnam Airlines’ position as a major carrier in the Southeast Asia region and marks a step forward in our efforts to become a strong global partner of SkyTeam” said Dr. Pham Ngoc Minh, president and CEO of Vietnam Airlines.
