President and CEO 

Pacific Asia Travel Association

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) was founded in 1951 and is the recognised authority on Asia Pacific travel and tourism. 

 

The more than 1,000 public and private sector members of PATA include national, state and municipal tourism bodies, airlines, cruise lines and car rental companies, hotel companies and attractions, tour operators and many other service providers from the travel and tourism industry. In addition, local PATA chapters in more than 20 countries coordinate local PATA member activities.

 

PATA’s mission is to enhance the sustainable growth, value and quality of Pacific Asia travel and tourism for the benefit of the region, the industry and the members.

 

Its main activities include the provision of cutting-edge strategic intelligence, timely research and industry analysis to its members and partners; advocacy and support on behalf of the region and the industry in times of crisis; the convening of travel trade shows that provide a unique platform for buyers and sellers of Asia Pacific travel products to conduct business; the organisation of local or regional workshops, seminars or conferences to enhance the professionalism of our sector; and the timely communication of relevant industry news and opportunities to its members. Thus PATA assists its members to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

 

PATA also actively works to protect and preserve the region’s unique natural and cultural resources and maintains a strong focus on environmental and industry sustainability. To this end, it works closely with the PATA Foundation, the Association’s charitable arm.

 

The Association's headquarters are located in Bangkok. PATA also maintains regional offices in Frankfurt, Dubai, Beijing, Macau SAR and in Sydney. In California, PATA operates its financial services and its North American regional office. PATA employs some 30 staff worldwide.

 

The Position: The President and CEO is an officer of the Association and reports to the PATA Board of Directors and the PATA Executive Committee through its elected Chairman. The Board, comprised of 76 members, meets twice a year. The Executive Committee meets at least twice a year in person and periodically through tele-conferences.

 

The President and CEO’s Tasks:

  1. Provides visionary leadership and prepares a two-year Strategic Plan and an annual Business Plan for Board approval, which serves to guide the Association’s activities
  2. Develops strategic and tactical goals for PATA and prepares policy recommendations for the Board and the Executive Committee
  3. Convenes meetings of the Board, the Executive Committee and other committees and advisory bodies and provides them with appropriate administrative support
  4. Acts as the principal public officer of PATA as a corporate entity and ensures that it meets all statutory and regulatory requirements
  5. Prepares annual revenue and expenditure budgets and ensures the maintenance of sound financial and other records
  6. Engages and manages PATA’s legal, financial, public relations, market research and other third party service providers and any contracted consultants
  7. Ensures that all membership services are aimed to produce the highest possible membership retention rate and new member acquisition
  8. Ensures that its membership services meet the expectations of PATA members in a dynamic environment, and that membership of PATA is seen as an essential means of  influencing Asia Pacific tourism and travel policies, strategies and development
  9. Builds, leads, motivates, evaluates and rewards the PATA staff
  10. Builds credible and influential networks among the leaders of travel, tourism and related industries and develops initiatives to build relationships with major industry organisations
  11. Maintains PATA’s high profile, visibility and international credibility as an  authoritative spokesperson on policy and strategic issues affecting the travel and tourism industry
  12. Maintains effective media relations, including international broadcast media, business and trade journals and online media
  13. Oversees travel trade shows, regional conferences and international marketing initiatives 
  14. Maintains a close working relationship with the PATA Foundation and provides its activities with operational support

 

The President and CEO’s Required Attributes:-

  • A strong personal and professional commitment to the Asia Pacific travel and tourism industry
  • A vision for PATA as the premier platform and voice of Asia Pacific travel and tourism
  • The ability to build and lead a strong team
  • Relevant senior management experience and mature judgment
  • Prior experience working with and reporting to Boards and Committees
  • Outstanding English language public speaking, writing and media skills
  • Analytic and financial management experience
  • Strong inter-cultural and negotiating skills and a sense of diplomacy
  • Familiarity with the not-for-profit corporate environment

 

The President and CEO’s Desired Attributes:-

  • Prior management experience in a membership-based trade association or travel industry-related body
  • Prior non-profit management experience
  • Communication skills in one or more Asian languages

PATA Seeks Experienced Corporate Communicator

Director, Corporate Communications

Pacific Asia Travel Association

Based in Bangkok

 

PATA is looking for an experienced communications specialist to further develop its growing reputation as an advocate for Asia Pacific travel and tourism.

 

The ideal candidate will have strong skills in the following areas:

  • Asia Pacific knowledge: solid grasp of the region’s business environment and its geo-political and cultural issues
  • Travel sector knowledge: understanding of the travel and tourism business
  • Strategic thinking: ability to analyse issues related to PATA’s advocacy platform
  • Media relations: ability to deliver messages to, and build relationships with key media
  • Communication skills: articulate and confident English-language communicator; able to write and deliver presentations

We are looking for a hands-on professional, who can efficiently manage large volumes of editorial work, with the assistance of external production agencies.

 

English is the core medium of communication, so the candidate must be fluent at a professional journalistic level in written and spoken English. Additional Asian languages are a bonus.

 

The successful candidate will be a team player working closely with the President and CEO, the Director, Strategic Intelligence Centre and the PATA management team, both in head office and overseas.
