Tour 5A: Magic Niah & Lambir Waterfalls, 2 days 1 night (option A)
Birds nest soup contains real bird’s nests, made with saliva by swiftlets living in the darkness of the caves. Niah cave has for centuries been source of these nests, scrapped of from the wall and high roof by local people perched on frail bamboo scaffolding. Men lived here some 40000 years ago, and their boat shaped coffins and wall paintings can be seen in the Painted Cave.
The plankwalk leading to the caves passes through an area of undisturbed forest where many birds and pygmy squirrels – one of the world’ smallest mammals – can be seen. This is a very good trail for a walk at dawn. The summit of the limestone hill (Bukit Kasut) is a steep climb of 400m up a well-marked trail, while a further branch off the main plankwalk leads to an Iban Longhouse.
Lambir Hills has fine hill forests as well as the famous waterfalls. The main waterfall area can be crowded at week-end, but small trails lead to a little known but equally beautiful falls.
