Mr Bert van Walbeek

Bert “Bow-Thai” van Walbeek has been a Master of Disaster for 25 years.
During his career he had to face the marketing crisis, and therefore opportunities, of the 1st Gulf War and as Chairman of the TAT Marketing Working Group for the May 1992 Recovery Committee developed the “The World, Our Guest”- campaign.
In November 2002 he completed, in cooperation with PATA, an information brochure on Risk & Crisis Management: “Expect the unexpected“. Based on this publication he has conducted many seminars on Crisis Prevention and Management around the world.
In 2006 he also completed PATA’s first educational & training module on the same subject and based on that publication he has since then conducted seminars for senior executives of many different compaines and organizations that start to realize that one has to expect the unexpected.
He developed, together with PATA, a Tourism Crisis Recovery Communication Plan for Bali as well as for Chengdu, in order to help the Tourism industries in that area back on their feet as soon as humanly possible and he is, since 3 years, consulting the Macau Government Tourism Office towards setting up a separate government entity called Tourism Crisis Management Office as its Official Advisor.
His company, The Winning Edge, is presently handling risk prevention and crisis management projects in China (PRC), Taiwan, Macau (SAR), Malaysia, Mauritius, Pakistan and, of course, Thailand.

Mr David Beirman
Senior Lecturer, University of Technology, Sydney
David Beirman is a senior lecturer in Tourism in the Management Discipline Group, University of Technology Sydney.. He completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees majoring in Sociology at the University of NSW. David has had a 30 year career in the Australian travel industry which encompassed work with retail travel agencies, wholesale tour operators, destination marketing and management, human resource management and in-service travel industry training. Prior to joining UTS as a full-time lecturer David had developed tourism courses and lectured part-time at UTS and other universities in tourism, marketing, Middle East studies and sociology.
His specialist areas of research are tourism risk, crisis and recovery management and destination marketing. He has been widely published in these fields. He has been invited as a keynote speaker in conferences all over the world and has provided crisis and recovery management consultation to governments and tourism businesses in Australia and overseas. David maintains industry connections as Hon. National Secretary of the Eastern Mediterranean Tourism Association, a member of PATA’s Tourism Rapid Response Crisis Management Task Force and as a member of the Smartraveller Travel Industry Advisory group to the Australian Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In September 2011 he organized the first ever UN World Tourism Organization conference held in Australia and the world’s first conference on the integration of Emergency Management and Tourism.

Josh has more than 10 years’ experience in the tourism industry operating private enterprise and consultancy services to design and construct several key facilities on the east coast of Australia. Josh has extensive operational experience within all facets of the hospitality service industry and is committed to the development of global sustainable business practices. Josh is the Manager for Sustainability and Capacity Building at EC3 Global/EarthCheck Training Academy and delivers more than 20 specific sustainability training programs globally. Josh has delivered successful Cluster Programs in offering sustainable business development practices globally to all groups of business and has conducted training within the National Accreditation Training Framework (NATF) sustainability programs to registered training organizations and trainers. Josh is a nationally accredited commercial food service professional and food service consultant with tertiary qualifications in applied sciences.
