Designing Dream Experiences

Wednesday 15 September 2010, 1230-1400

The Venetian Macao~Resort~Hotel (Sicily Room 2501-2502)

Programme

Experiential travel was once the domain of the youthful back-packers or those who sought niche areas of activity. Today, at the high-and-mid-ends of the travel and tourism market, this concept has gained much ground and is fast becoming a mainstream activity. With travellers becoming more enlightened and environmentally conscious, the experiential travel market is sought after by most destinations and tourism operators for its ability to generate higher yields with lesser impact on the resource base. The activity also generates direct avenues of incomes for communities who become strong stakeholders in such operations.

At its best, travel and tourism must provide the traveller dream-like memories and leave lasting impressions of the places they visit. It must ensure sustainability of the planet's resources and solid benefits to all stakeholders.

This 90-minute lunch-time session will begin with a presentation by Mr. Gary O’Riordan, Deputy Managing Director – Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) about Backpackers and youth tourism and indigenous tourism, follow by Mr. Renton de Alwis, Advisor - PATA on the potential of home stay type models for experiential tourism. Next, the session will be joined by Mr. Imtiaz Muqbil, Executive Editor – Travel Impact Newswire, on spiritual tours and pilgrimage holiday.

The workshop session will be moderated by Mr. Hiran Cooray, Chairman – PATA and Chairman – Jetwings Hotel Ltd. This will be your chance to draw on their collective knowledge and experience by posing questions, thoughts and comments of particular interest and relevance to you as an operator engaging with this dynamic source-market.
