Luncheon Workshops

Traversing the Pacific: A Privileged Experience
Wednesday September 15, 12.30 –14.00 hrs

Programme          Registration form

PATA in conjunction with the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) will host a workshop about travel to and within the South Pacific Region.

While travel to the region is often perceived as difficult due to distance, cost and limited air travel, the South Pacific offers a plethora of unique experiences. The purpose of the workshop is to create increased awareness and discussion about travel in the region. It will also outline ways in which Pacific nations are attempting to attract new travellers from the emerging markets of Asia by increasing competitiveness and product offerings.

Although the cost of traveling within the region may be higher than other more developed areas of the globe, the wealth of natural beauty, unique culture and generous hospitality leaves the South Pacific as one of the few untouched jewels remaining to be discovered. Indeed we see visiting our shores as a ‘Privilege’ to be Experienced and treasured.

Speakers:
•    Ms. Manatu Vivili – Senior Marketing Officer, Tonga Tourism
•    Mr. Andrew Nihopara – Deputy Chief Executive Officer, SPTO
•    Ms. Annie Niatu – General Manager, Vanuatu Tourism
•    Mr. Dwayne Bentley – Marketing Manager, Samoa Tourism

Designing Dream Experiences
Wednesday September 15, 12.30 hrs – 14.00 hrs

Programme          Registration form

Experiential travel was once the domain of youthful backpackers or those who sought niche areas of activity. Today, at the high- and mid-ends of the travel and tourism market, this concept has gained much ground and is fast becoming a mainstream activity. With travellers becoming more enlightened and environmentally conscious, the experiential travel market is sought after by most destinations and tourism operators for its ability to generate higher yields with lesser impact on the resource base. The activity also generates direct avenues of income for communities who become strong stakeholders in such operations.

At its best, travel and tourism provides the traveller with dream-like memories and lasting impressions of the places they visit. It must ensure sustainability of the planet's resources and solid benefits to all stakeholders.

In its leadership role tracking and carving new directions for the travel and tourism industry, PATA will bring together a group of expert presenters to discuss the research, development, marketing, promotion and distribution of this fast growing segment of travel and tourism.

Speakers:

  • Mr. Renton de Alwis (pictured) – Advisor, PATA
  • Mr. Gary O’Riordan – Deputy Managing Director, Australian Tourism Export Council
  • Mr. Imtiaz Muqbil – Editor, Travel Impact Newswire

Moderated by Mr. Hiran Cooray – PATA Chairman

CSR for Travel and Tourism
Thursday September 16, 12.45 hrs – 14.15 hrs

Programme          Registration form

Corporate Social Responsibility is a rising phenomenon in travel today. Far from a passing fad, increasingly CSR is influencing how and where people choose to travel, the creation of new travel opportunities and products, and increasing tourism’s role as a force for good.

During this year’s mart, PATA will be staging a luncheon workshop which will include a number of top speakers on the subject and will provide ample time for questions and interactive discussion.

Speakers:

  • Mr. John King (pictured) – Chairman, PATA’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Committee; Chairman, Australian Tourism Export Council; Managing Director, Global Tourism & Leisure P/L, will provide details of the forthcoming Pacific Asia Indigenous Tourism Conference to be held in Darwin (Australia) in the second half of 2011, one of PATA’s 60th Anniversary events. The conference will look at the increasing role of the tourism industry in engaging with indigenous peoples of the region in ensuring the preservation and promotion of unique cultures and encouraging more equitable social inclusion. He will also facilitate the workshop
•  Ms. Nicole Haeusler - Partner and Senior Consultant, MAS|Contour, Germany, will outline the meaning of CSR in tourism as well as changing consumer attitudes and responses to CSR in Europe;

•  Mr. Randy Durband – Senior Partner, Robin Tauck and Partners, US, will look at the other side of the coin and provide details of the growing phenomenon of traveller philanthropy

PTM2010: Emerging Markets and Trends

PATA Travel Mart 2010 reports high registrations and welcomes a surge in emerging market buyers. All of this year’s 328 buyer delegates have been carefully vetted by the independent Buyer Selection Committee to maximise the potential for successful contracting opportunities for PTM2010 sellers.

While the largest percentage of buyers still hail from Europe, there has been a marked increase in the number of buyer delegates from emerging markets such as China, Russia and India. According to Regis Morvan, General Director of RM Consultants, Russia’s outbound tourist numbers are growing dramatically, with 2 million Russians going abroad in Q1 of 2010 alone – a 44% increase over the same time last year. In addition, sellers from niche destinations such as Bhutan, Sri Lanka and numerous Pacific islands will be well represented, offering buyers exclusive opportunities to gain a foothold in these markets.

Says Arjun Sharma, Vice Chairman, PATA India Chapter: “We at PATA India are not surprised that the Indian contingent at the mart is one of the largest. Least affected by the global recession, India is the world’s fourth largest economy. Indian travellers have created an explosive outbound market, and buyer numbers have gone up exponentially this year.

“In addition, India continues to be an exciting year-round destination with growing infrastructure and excellent world-class hotels. Its product diversity and ancient civilisation offers the visitor myriad experiences. India is a rising star – a country likely to become a major tourist destination in the coming years”.
