Mountain Trail to a Sustainable Future
The Pang Soong Nature Trail, a four-hour walk
in a pristine forest in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is 50% complete. It should be
finished by January 2008.
A private sector and village community joint venture
that received a PATA Foundation grant earlier this year, the Trail will
follow the Mae Lai stream from 1,000 m above sea level, back into the
mountains and over or around some 17 waterfalls to the source of the stream,
at 1,500 m.
PATA member Track of the Tiger is building the trail
and has planted a nursery in the woods around the village. The village owns
the rights to the forest and will levy an entrance fee for each tourist
using the trail.

Lao War Caves Story to be Told
Caves that provided shelter to 23,000 Laotians
during nine years of aerial bombardment in a "secret war" are the
beneficiary of a 2007 PATA Foundation grant. Between 1964 and 1973, up to
480 caves in Viengxay, Houaphanh province in Lao's northeast were
transformed into a de facto city.
The PATA Foundation has signed an agreement with UNWTO,
the Lao National Tourism Administration and SNV Consulting to help fund the
research and development of an audio tour and related promotional materials
on the "Viengxay Story"; the personal accounts of the people who endured
incredible hardship during years of conflict.
