Update from Tourism Fiji @ 1300 hours (local) 18 March 2010
Tourism Fiji advises that domestic air services into the north eastern region of Fiji are now fully operational as of today (18 March). These flights were suspended as a safety measure when Tropical Cyclone Tomas passed through the region. Pacific Sun flights into Vanua Levu, Savusavu and Taveuni were given the ‘green light’ following inspections of runways and airport facilities by local aviation authorities.
Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto said this was fantastic news for the region’s hoteliers and resort operators, all of which have reported their properties have now ‘in the main been tidied up and are fully functional and ready to accept guests’. Mr Tuamoto added that, while many trees had been knocked down and several coastal villages had suffered considerable damage, hotels and resorts in the region had only reported minimal damage - mostly to thatching. “The resumption of air services into the north-eastern region is fantastic news for the area which is very dependent on tourism,” he said. “More to the point this means the entire country’s tourism industry, particularly in the main tourism gateways of Viti Levu, the Mamauca and Yasawa Islands, is more or less back on track.”
