Creepy crawlies roam the Big Apple

The bedbug menace is a growing problem in New York City, with infestations rising fivefold in the 12-months to June, according to a report by eTurboNews. This past weekend even the New York Empire State Building fell victim to the scourge of blood-sucking bugs.

Staff at the skyscraper discovered an infestation of bedbugs in the building's basement. Exterminators were promptly called but sightseers were not happy. It isn't clear why bedbugs have become such a problem in New York, though it could be related to the large numbers of international travellers that explore the city.
