Devastation in Christchurch

An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck Christchurch, New Zealand, on September 4 at 0435 hours (local time). As of September 6, over a hundred aftershocks have been reported, affecting Christchurch as well as neighbouring areas.

Many landmark buildings have been damaged, schools are closed and flights have been disrupted, although the international airport is now open for business again. Reports are coming in of water contamination and power shortages. The estimated damage at the moment has been put at NZ$ two-billion.

A state of emergency has been declared in the city.
