Tourists are thronging to Hawaii in a big way. The total spend for visitors who came to Hawaii in June 2010 rose to US $948.9 million from US$131.7 million same time last year, according to a report released this week by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
The positive growth in visitor expenditures for June 2010 can be attributed to higher average daily visitor spending (US$161 per person, up from US$151 per person in June 2009) and a 13.6% increase in total visitor arrivals. Arrivals rose for the seventh month in a row to 625,522 visitors.
Of the top four visitor markets, arrivals from Japan were up 47.8% in June 2010, after a -29.8% decline in June 2009 which was a severely depressed period due to H1N1 flu concerns. Arrivals from US (east) were +10.1%, US (west) were at +7.3%) and Canada was +7.8%, also an increase compared to last June.
The survey also showed that more visitors are travelling to only one island rather than island-hopping, and are arriving as part of group tours.
