PATA member MyOnlineSafe is offering crucial travel tips on safety and security.
“With the holiday season upon us and the numerous tips and advice offered by related companies for a smooth, hassle-free holiday we’re stressing the importance of following our own very important guidelines,” says CEO Martin Hook.
1. Insurance
Cheap does not always mean better! Make sure your policy has adequate cover for every eventuality, including: Hospital treatment, medical evacuation, cancellation or curtailment and any adventure sports or activities you plan to participate in.
2. Visas and Vaccinations
Plan ahead - and make sure that your passport is valid for a minimum period of six months
Check with your travel provider that you have all appropriate visas
Check with your Doctor for any vaccination requirements at least eight weeks prior to travelling, along with any recommended anti-malarial drugs

3. Documents
Scan/photograph copies of your essential documents and store them on MyOnlineSafe.com
Passport details
Vaccination certificates
Visas
Driving licence
Itineraries
E-tickets
Details and serial numbers of valuables, such as iPod, camera and mobile telephone
Spectacle prescriptions (NB: Sightseeing can be seriously affected with broken glasses!)
Use the MOS ‘My contacts’ pages to keep records of bank and credit card details and emergency contact numbers in case of loss or theft
Advise your bank of your travel dates and location(s)
Do not throw away the Barcode sticker on your passport after check-in. This is the link to your luggage should it be lost or misdirected!
4. Precautions
Always take your room key with you
Avoid wearing expensive jewellery or watches
Keep any shoulder/handbags on the inside when walking down a road
Know the local emergency services phone number
Never underestimate the sun; take quality high factor sunscreen and drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids (avoid tap water, ice and uncapped local bottled water)
On arrival at your hotel, put a copy of their business card in your wallet/purse. It’s essential for enabling a taxi driver to get you back safely. Or simply phone the hotel for assistance.
5. Research
Most Foreign Offices have travel advice web sites. Research your destination, have a thorough understanding of local laws and customs, dangers and annoyances and duty free allowances.
Finally enjoy! Get to know the local people, try and learn some local phrases, especially ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Any attempt at speaking the local language is always appreciated!
