PATA Foundation Supports Scholarship Program to Help Advance Women Executives in the Travel and Tourism Industry

Invites members across Asia/Pacific, South Asia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and UAE to nominate their women executives

Singapore, 12 June 2009 – The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Foundation today announced its support for the U21Global-MasterCard scholarship program for women in the travel and tourism industry. The non-profit foundation called on companies in the industry to act promptly and take advantage of the opportunity to offer their women executives the chance to equip themselves with the latest in training and knowledge.  The last date for nominating candidates for the annual scholarship program is 30 June.

“We are excited to be supporting this scholarship program and will work with U21Global and MasterCard to further maximize its reach. Programs such as these are a great support to the industry, particularly during the current economic climate, and help address an important issue the industry is facing – that of developing a skilled workforce who will bring back their knowledge and expertise to the business",” said Terry Francis, Chairman, PATA Foundation.

Launched in 2006, the scholarship program aims to empower women executives through education to realize their full potential. It comprises 20 scholarships for the U21Global Postgraduate Diploma of Business Administration.

Developed by U21Global in conjunction with the Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute (a part of Nottingham University Business School), the program is intended for graduates who want to acquire skills in the management and marketing of tourism and travel products and programs. It is designed to provide participants with a solid foundation in core management subjects and equip students with a firm grounding in basic management capabilities. Core subjects include general management subjects such as Organizational Behavior, Finance, Marketing Management and Strategic Management as well as tourism-specific subjects like Service Quality in Travel and Tourism and Understanding the Tourism Consumer.

Students completing the Diploma can articulate to The University of Nottingham Master of Science in Tourism and Travel Management. Moreover, studying has never been more flexible – students under the program enjoy the benefit of studying online, allowing them to better manage their work and educational commitments.

The 20 scholarships are made possible by a grant from MasterCard Worldwide and U21Global. Since its inauguration, 60 women have been awarded the MasterCard-U21Global scholarship program for women in travel and tourism. The scholars are professionals from a broad spectrum of the industry, from hotels and airlines to travel and tour operators.

“We are happy that PATA Foundation, like us, sees the tremendous value of the program and is keen to encourage women in the industry to participate and benefit from it. We look forward to working with the foundation and helping women executives around the region achieve their professional goals. Through this program, we want to equip them with the management skills and industry know-how that they need, to take on leadership roles and champion the cause of the travel and tourism industry,” said Georgette Tan, Vice President, Communications, Asia/Pacific, Middle East & Africa, MasterCard Worldwide.

Organizations from the travel and tourism industry across Asia/Pacific, South Asia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and UAE are invited to nominate female employees. U21Global and MasterCard will institute a distinguished panel of judges to choose the 20 worthy recipients. Those interested in more information on the scholarships and course components can log on to U21Global’s website http://www.u21global.edu.sg/mastercard
