Cendant Unveils Research on SME Travel Buying Behaviour

Cendant Travel Distribution Services has announced the results of research undertaken in Asia Pacific, to determine the travel buying behaviour of small to medium-sized companies (SMEs).

Results of the study indicate that there is no single model that applies to SMEs across the Asia Pacific region, with country-to-country differences in spending patterns, priority of travel agent services and attitudes to online travel all driving the need for a tailored approach.

The majority of travel buying among regional SMEs is decentralised, with the function often sitting with a senior executive’s personal assistant or someone in the human resources department. There are few full-time travel managers in SME’s, unlike large corporations.

Across all markets, SMEs still rely heavily on their travel agents for flights (Australia 89%; Singapore 60%; Hong Kong 56%) and to a lesser degree, accommodation (Australia 27%; Singapore 33%; Hong Kong 30%).

Tourism Victoria Reports a Golden Forthnight of Games

Tourism Victoria has announced that the Commonwealth Games generated the busiest two weeks on record for Melbourne’s hotels and Victoria is on track to reach a forecast 90,000 visitors. Preliminary research from M2006 indicates that the target of 40,000 international visitors and 50,000 interstate arrivals will be close to the number of visitors who came to Victoria for the Games, generating an estimated AU$270 million (US$191 million).

The average length of stay for leisure visitors is estimated at six nights, compared with a longer average of 17 nights for accommodation booked through the Games Travel Office (this was influenced by longer staying media, Games, technical and corporate officials). Melbourne hotels reported that although they were at or near capacity, particularly during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the Games Accommodation Hotline ensured that visitors who still needed accommodation were able to find it.

International visitors reported that Melbourne’s hotels compared favourably to those in cities overseas holding big events, with rooms always available at the published rates. Visitor Information Centres recorded record numbers of enquiries and day tour companies reported strong sales in tours to the Great Ocean Road and the Yarra Valley. Final research on the economic impact of the Games will be released later in the year.

Ascend Khao Phanom Rung, 'Home of the Gods'

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is promoting the Khao Phanom Rung festival in Buriram Province, northeastern Thailand, which will take place April 1-2. The festival reflects an ancient folk belief that, at least once in a lifetime, one should make a pilgrimage to the summit of Khao Phanom Rung to pay homage to the gods, deities and celestial beings that reside on the mountain. The tradition has been carefully preserved by the residents of northeast Thailand over the centuries.

Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung, a ruined temple sanctuary set on the summit of Phanom Rung, was built between the 10th and 13th centuries. A religious sanctuary dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung symbolises Mount Kailasa, the heavenly abode of Shiva. Nepal Unveils New Tourism Brand

Nepal tourism's new 'Naturally Nepal' brand was unveiled by Nepal's State Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Mrs Yankila Sherpa, March 5. The new brand will be adopted by stakeholders that market Nepal domestically and internationally.

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) Chief Executive Officer Mr Tek Bahadur Dangi said: “[The new brand] will be instrumental in increasing the number of tourists to Nepal. Prior to this campaign, we were solely dependant on the individual overseas tour operators to promote Nepal, but we will now all be working together in a concerted, focused and centralised effort to penetrate new segments of the consumer market.”

He added: "Our philosophy is that a destination brand is the totality of perceptions that a customer holds about the experiences associated with a place."

The brand, developed by an Indian agency, is the result of more than six months of research and planning in consultation with the NTB and a range of private and government agencies in Nepal, India and other major tourist-generating markets.
