Silvia Sitou:
PATA’s Face of the Future
At
the opening ceremony of the 53rd PATA Annual Conference, PATA bestowed
the 2004 Face of the Future honour upon Ms. Silvia Sitou, Head of the
Research and Planning Department at the Macau Government Tourist Office.
To be deserving of the PATA Face of the Future honour, a PATA Young
Tourism Professional (YTP) member has to have excelled in his or her
career and demonstrated leadership and active involvement in PATA and
the PATA chapter network. Ms. Sitou has thrown herself into the
activities of PATA through her participation in and contribution to the
organisation of PATA events, involvement in the PATA Macau Chapter,
co-ordination of the PATA Task Force to Macau and support of the YTP
Programme.

Message from the YTP Chairman
Dear
YTP members,
The development of Young Tourism Professionals (YTP) within the PATA
network is an important element of PATA’s strategy to move forward with
youth tourism. Since launching in Bali last year, the PATA YTP
programme now has 82 YTP members in 22 countries.
At the 53rd PATA Annual Conference on Jeju Island, April 18-22, we
outlined six key strategic objectives for action in the coming year. One
key priority is to provide networking opportunities to familiarise YTPs
with PATA members and the PATA brand. In the long term, there will be a
need to fill seats on the PATA Board. YTP membership offers a great
stepping-stone for talented young individuals interested in serving one
of the world’s premier industry associations at Board level.
To involve YTP members in the formation of YTP policies and strategies,
I will soon announce the 2004/2005 PATA Young Tourism Professionals
Committee, which will adopt the following strategies over the next 12
months:
-
Establish strategic alliances with
youth organisations
-
Establish closer co-operation between
education and industry
-
Hold a YTP forum at the 54th PATA
Annual Conference in Macau, 2005
-
Develop a YTP section on
www.PATA.org.
An example of an active strategic
alliance between PATA YTP and industry is MasterCard’s generous
sponsorship of two YTP awards: the Face of the Future and the Young
Tourism Strategist of the Year. These awards require your active
participation and nomination. The deadline for submitting your entry to
the Young Tourism Strategist of the Year award is July 1.
I look forward to your active participation in the PATA YTP programme.
If you have any questions, suggestions and feedback, please feel free to
contact PATA YTP Co-ordinator, Ms. Sucheera Natenin at
YTP@PATA.org.
Yours sincerely,

Mayur (Mac) Patel
Chairman

Pollock: Tourism
Has Come of Age
DestiCorp
CEO, Ms. Anna Pollock, delivered the keynote address on the theme,
"Tourism is Everybody’s Business", during the opening ceremony of the
53rd PATA Annual Conference. "Tourism has finally come of age," she
said. "Tourism can be the ultimate healing force on this planet. At its
essence it enables the most powerful form of human communication -- the
interaction between host and guest; the communion and celebration of
strangers."
Ms. Pollock said tourism organisations had to adopt new technology to
reach the increasingly powerful consumer. She touched on four main
technological drivers: digitisation, connectivity, convergence and
interoperability. Ms. Pollock said two thirds of the travel experience
occurs "in the customer’s head by following the journey through the
cycle -- before, during and after arrival and departure." She suggested
that tourism suppliers should look at ways to use technological and
other resources to work within "the world of dreams".
Ms. Pollock said people were facing the "napsterisation" of the travel
industry. She pointed to a future where consumers will carry personal
digital assistants (PDAs) and will be able to design, book and pay for
holidays 24/7 wherever they are.

Bellamy
Proposes Mass Tourism 'Eco-Tax'
A
big challenge facing global tourism is balancing the demands of habitat
and biodiversity with the aspirations of people, said Prof. David
Bellamy during his 53rd PATA Annual Conference presentation entitled
"Biodiversity vs. Mass Tourism". "There is no need for mass tourism to
adversely effect biodiversity," he said. "In fact, handled in the right
way, it can be the main driver to work with it rather than against it."
Prof. Bellamy cited many examples of how mass tourism can upgrade,
complement or sustain a landscape or habitat. One example he used was
Disneyland in Florida. "The lake in the middle was so polluted that it
had to be drained and dug out before Tinkerbell came to the rescue and
refilled it with clean spring water, unbottled of course," he said. "The
expertise of their landscape architects not only drew on the
biodiversity of the world’s flora to beautify the park … but also
restored a great chunk of the everglades."
The well-known broadcaster proposed that for mass tourism and
biodiversity to work together for everybody’s benefit, anybody currently
living within or at the fringes of important ecosystems, and who are not
already benefiting from development, must be compensated. Bellamy
proposed that funds for compensation be raised via an "eco-tax". He
cited a Chinese study that concluded that "an eco-tax could be a viable
solution to conflict resolution in many of China’s (and indeed the
world’s) protected areas".

Competency Enhanced by Trisakti
Until recently, Indonesia's hospitality training system enjoyed limited
ownership or input from industry employers -- graduates often had to
retrain to meet industry standards. Trisakti Institute of Tourism in
Jakarta has played an integral role in reforming Indonesia's hospitality
training system.
-
Trisakti
was the only private training institute to participate in a national
pilot programme that began in 1993 to establish best practices in
competency-based hospitality training
-
Trisakti's
general objectives were to establish an academic vision and mission for
competency-based training (CBT) and to develop partnerships between
government, educators and employers in Indonesia and other countries to
meet international industry training standards.
-
Since
Trisakti piloted its CBT curricula, the Indonesian ministries of Culture
and Tourism; National Education; and Manpower and Transmigration as
well as hospitality industry associations, have accepted it as the model
and benchmark for hospitality training
-
90%
of hospitality-related schools in Indonesia now use CBT standards, and
there is also a standards certification and registration body to oversee
the 400 assessors and 50 master assessors planned in 2004.
Trisakti Institute of Tourism received the 2004 PATA Gold Awards Grand
Award for Education at the 53rd PATA Annual Conference on Jeju Island.
