Director General, Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia
Datuk Seri Mirza Mohammad Taiyab was appointed Director General of Tourism Malaysia on 1 September 2006. During his term of office as Director General, the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign was successfully organised, promoted and celebrated. The Malaysian tourism industry successfully recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals and receipts at the time.
During his 35-year tenure with Tourism Malaysia, Dato’ Mirza served in various capacities, accumulating experience in key portfolios including advertising, international promotions, conventions, marketing support services, communications and domestic promotions. He also headed the Tourism Malaysia office in Frankfurt in 1989 to oversee tourism promotion efforts in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, after which he became director of Tourism Malaysia Tokyo office from 1995 to 2000.
His early education was at the Government English School in Bagan Serai, Perak, Malaysia. Upon completion of Senior Cambridge, with all options available to him for his tertiary education, Datuk Seri Mirza chose to pursue studies in Tourism by enrolling in the nation’s premier Hospitality Management School at UiTM. He earned a Diploma in Tourism Administration (DTA), followed by a Degree in Business Administration (BBA) and finally, capped his academic qualifications with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from UiTM/ Ohio University, USA.
He was named “Tourism Marketing Man of the Year” by PATWA in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the marketing and branding of Malaysia as an attractive and progressive tourism destination. He also received the CHT Pursuit of Excellence (Tourism) Award 2016 for his achievements and contributions to the Malaysian society.
To the travel trade members, he is an icon synonymous with the tourism and hospitality industry, and truly a leader by example.
