HONG KONG, February 16, 2017 — Recognised as one of the world’s 10 “most amazing cable-car experiences”, Ngong Ping 360 is committed to providing guests with a unique travel experience. The company has launched a range of new programmes and services in its quest to become the gateway to Lantau Island West and a must-visit tourist destination. We also strive to maintain the stability and reliability of our cable-car services. Average reliability reached 99.87% in 2016, equivalent to a delay of less than 1 minute in every 8-hour operation.
Due to a number of factors, such as the launch of visa-relaxation measures by several Southeast Asian countries, new large-scale tourist attractions in neighbouring regions and the depreciation of foreign currencies, the number of visitors to Hong Kong declined by 4.5% in 2016. 1 In response, we implemented innovative promotional activities, seized the opportunity afforded by the increasing popularity of in-depth travel and actively utilized e-commerce platforms. In 2016, 1.71 million people visited Ngong Ping 360, representing a 5.5% increase from 1.62 million in 2015. The average number of guests per day increased by 3% between 2015 and 2016, from 5,100 to 5,254. Last year, 57% of our guests were from Western and Asian countries, 28% were from China and Macau and 15% were Hong Kong residents. Visitors from the Philippines (48%), India (31%) and Japan (30%) experienced the highest growth rates relative to other countries.
Actively exploring overseas markets and utilizing e-commerce platforms
Ngong Ping 360’s Commerce Team has carried out a number of strategic promotional activities in several countries and used the matching fund provided by the government for the last 2 years to promote the company and Hong Kong in overseas companies. For instance, the team partners with travel agencies abroad to hold product recommendation and explanation sessions that advertise local products and services and provide potential guests with up-to-date information on the region. The aim is to bring more foreign tourists to Hong Kong and raise awareness of Ngong Ping 360. Visitor figures for 2016 suggest that along with high-growth markets, regions using government matching funds to launch publicity campaigns experienced considerable growth. We will continue to explore and expand our visitor sources in China and regional short-haul markets such as Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines. We will also collaborate closely with local travel agencies to design and promote Hong Kong itineraries tailored to the needs and preferences of individual visitors.
As e-commerce platforms become increasingly popular, we are focusing on enhancing our cooperation with sizable platforms in the Chinese, Taiwanese and Southeast Asian markets to promote Ngong Ping 360 and 360 Holidays’ individual travel products and open up their market potential. In 2016, the number of our guests purchasing cable car related products through e-commerce platforms increased by 58% relative to the previous year.
New guided tour to enhance local travel experience
Through its wholly owned licensed tour operator 360 Holidays, Ngong Ping 360 has launched an extraordinary guided tour to enrich our guests’ tourism experience. The 360 Best of Lantau South Tour is a specially designed sky-land-sea guided tour of South Lantau. The route is well planned, compact and flexible. Guests can choose to start their journey from Tung Chung or from Mui Wo, and then to visit a range of South Lantau’s signature destinations, such as Ngong Ping Village, the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Tai O Fishing Village, Cheung Sha and Pui O.
Rewarding guests with series of promotional activities
In the first month after our re-opening in 2017, guests holding discount cards obtained before would be able to redeem one 360 Annual Pass at a preferential price of HK$100 for unlimited cable-car rides (Standard Cabin). 2 To commemorate Ngong Ping 360’s 10th anniversary, all 10 year old children (born between 18 September 2006 and 17 September 2007) are permitted to take unlimited cable-car rides (Standard Cabin) for free until 31 December 2017. Discounts are offered to accompanying adults. Guests have also been provided with shopping discounts in designated retail shops in Ngong Ping Village.
Establishment of 360 Sharing Ambassadors to give back to society
In July 2016, Ngong Ping 360 established its first volunteer team, known as the 360 Sharing Ambassadors, to more systematically plan and execute a range of volunteer activities. To date, 60 full-time employees and their relatives have become 360 Sharing Ambassadors and participated in volunteer activities, such as knitting scarfs and distributing them to single elderly residents in the district, providing massages for the elderly to help reduce their fatigue and pain, and organising workshops and parties for ethnic-minority children and low-income families. This year, Chinese New Year fell during the rope-replacement period. The Managing Director, management team and other colleagues took the opportunity to visit local elderlies in the district. The management team even sang New Year songs accompanied by erhu and violin to celebrate Chinese New Year with Tung Chung residents.
Ngong Ping 360’s Managing Director Dr Stella Kwan offered the following remarks. “Ngong Ping 360 is striving to become the gateway to Lantau Island West and a must-visit tourist destination. During the rope-replacement project, we will continue to work closely with several travel agencies. Our Land and Sea Guided Tour has been well received. The rope-replacement project is now in full swing and the cable-car service is expected to resume in early June. Meanwhile, we are planning a series of events to celebrate our re-opening. We will continuously increase the rate of sales conducted on e-commerce platforms and launch new guided tours to give guests even more memorable travel experiences”. Dr Kwan went on to note that “as a tourist attraction rooted in the community of Lantau Island, Ngong Ping 360 aims to enhance cohesion between community members, corporations and citizens through the formation of a volunteer team. The team has not only enabled staff to give back to society, but also fostered their sense of pride in and belonging to the company as well as their ability and inclination to empower society”.
