October 28, 2015 – Leading global travel authority Lonely Planet has chosen George Town, Malaysia as one of the world’s Top 10 Cities for next year in LONELY PLANET’S BEST IN TRAVEL 2016, published today.

BEST IN TRAVEL 2016 is Lonely Planet’s 11th eagerly-awaited annual collection of the best trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the upcoming year.

George Town is ranked fourth on the book’s list of Top 10 Cities 2016.

George Town’s increasingly modern and arty spin is a fascinating counterpoint to its historical UNESCO World Heritage-listed streetscape,” Lonely Planet says. “Initiatives such as the Urban Xchange: Crossing Over festival have inspired the creation of even more funky street art, and an abandoned former transport hub has been repurposed as the Hin Bus Depot Art Centre. Art, film, music and dance all feature at George Town’s most versatile exhibition space, and new accommodation such as the Sinkeh boutique guesthouse also provide a haven for the expanding arts scene.”

“Time your visit with one of the city’s regular arts and music festivals to experience one of Asia’s most inventive and diverse arts communities.”

Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Cities 2016 are:

1. Kotor, Montenegro
2. Quito, Ecuador
3. Dublin, Ireland
4. George Town, Malaysia
5. Rotterdam, the Netherlands
6. Mumbai, India
7. Fremantle, Australia
8. Manchester, UK
9. Nashville, USA
10. Rome, Italy

Each year, BEST IN TRAVEL’s recommendations are drawn from hundreds of ideas submitted by Lonely Planet’s staff, authors and extended community of travellers, bloggers and tweeters. Their suggestions are then refined by a panel of in-house travel experts, based on topicality, excitement, value and that special X-factor. Lonely Planet’s focus is on the merits of each destination and the unique experiences they offer travellers.
