Make Holidays Greener 2019 to launch to holidaymakers on 5 June – World Environment Day

LONDON, May 22, 2019 – Make Holidays Greener is returning for 2019, Travelife for Accommodation in partnership with ABTA are encouraging holidaymakers and the travel industry to take positive social and environmental action to help create better places to live in, and better places to visit.

‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ was chosen as a follow-on from MHG 2018’s ‘Say no to plastic’ theme. Plastics will continue to be addressed in this year’s campaign, but it will also look at managing waste, including food waste, from a broader perspective.

The campaign will launch to consumers on World Environment Day, 5 June with social media activity including a blog and campaign video.

Take action

The tourism industry can get involved this year in a number of ways, from looking at recycling in destination, reducing food waste, finding credible alternatives for single-use plastics or inviting travellers to take part in green initiatives during their holiday. The campaign will run from 5 June until the end of September.

Engaging Holidaymakers

You can encourage your customers to make a pledge.  There is a Reduce, Reuse Recycle pledge, as well as 14 other pledges to choose from including three new for this year — Go meat free, Reduce or offset my journey footprint and respect animals.

Holidaymakers who make a pledge will be entered into a prize draw to win a durable carry-on bag by sustainability leaders Patagonia.

You can share the campaign infographic which offers simple tips to holidaymakers on how they can consider the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle framework at every stage of their travel journey. We’d encourage travel companies to use this content as a way to engage customers and demonstrate the small changes they could make that can make a difference – whether it be via an in-store or in resort poster, on social media or on your website.
