It is viewed as a supreme visual art form of self- expression and cultivation through the writing of Chinese script using ink and brush. It is the outward expression of the artist’s inner state demonstrated by the rhythm, movement and flow of each brush stroke.

The gentle and rhythmic movement involved in the practice calms the mind and the focus required to create each brushstroke promotes mindfulness.

Experienced calligrapher will demonstrate his/her calligraphy skill, explain and demonstrate how to hold the brush, the order of each brushstroke, explain the meaning of each word and guide participants with templates of meaningful Chinese scripts (i.e. 澳門 Macao、福 Blessing、愛 Love、壽 Longevity、康 Health、美 Beauty、和 Harmonious、喜 Happiness、財 Wealth、吉 Auspicious、德 Virtue). Each participant should be able to receive coaching from the calligrapher, ample practice at the workshop and eventually complete his/her personal masterpiece as momento.

The word “Azulejo” is derived from the Arabic “az-zulayj”, meaning “small polished stones”, with its manufacturing developed by Muslims in the Middle Ages. It is a form of ceramic tile work that was later applied extensively by the Portuguese to decorate building walls, following geometric, floral and figurative motifs.

Influenced by Portuguese culture, Portuguese Azulejo Tiles remain very popular and can be found on street signs, churches and building walls in Macao.

The practice of this craft is also representative of the harmonious co-existence of Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macao. The transmission and continuity of this industry also reflects the multicultural dimension of the local community, being a good example of the diversity that exists in the decorative elements of the city’s urban spaces.

Instructor will provide various stencils or for the more creative participants may opt to free-hand their unique sketches and designs with guidance. The painted tile will serves as a keep-sake for years to treasure.

Registration is only open to delegates who have registered for the PAS 2024 conference. The workshops are available on a first-come-first-served basis, grab your seat before they are full!

Tourists visit to explore its historic sites, try its famous diverse gastronomy offerings, including street food, and experience its lively leisure and gaming industry.

Though a small economy, Macao pursues an open economic policy. It boasts one of the lowest tax regimes in the Asia Pacific region and sound financial stability. As a free port and a separate tariff zone, which has no foreign exchange controls, Macao is an active player in the regional economy and a vital link between the mainland Chinese and global markets.

Macao's intangible cultural heritage encompasses a diverse range of practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills passed down through generations. This includes oral traditions, performing arts, social customs, rituals, and the know-how behind traditional crafts. The designation of Macao as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017 adds powerful international branding to the city’s portfolio.
