Connecting with the Resilient LGBTQ+ Travel Market

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge the tourism industry, it’s more important than ever for travel businesses to create effective messaging and ensure that they are making all travelers feel welcome in their outreach.

With so many destinations competing for the attention of future travelers, now is the time to stand out in the crowd. LGBTQ+ travel represents an opportunity to engage one of the most resilient and loyal segments, as documented in a recent survey from IGLTA, the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association.

In this issue of the PATA VE Bulletin, IGLTA shares the results from its Post COVID-19 LGBTQ+ Travel Survey as well as key trends and tips to help the tourism industry reap the benefits of charting an inclusive path to recovery.

Highlights include:

  • Approximately 15,000 LGBTQ+ individuals around the world completed IGLTA’s Post COVID-19 LGBTQ+ Travel Survey, with the largest representation from the United States, Brazil, Canada, France and Mexico.

  • Two-thirds (66%) of global respondents said they would feel comfortable traveling again for leisure before the end of 2020, with September and October the most popular choices.

  • Forty-five (45%) of global respondents said they would be likely/very likely to take a short-haul flight (3 hours or less) in the next six months.

The survey also focused on the probability of LGBTQ+ individuals participating in a variety of travel- related activities in the next six months, again showcasing the strong willingness to travel and the diversity of interests within the LGBTQ+ travel market:
