RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
PATA INDIA CHRIST UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER EVENT

Bangalore, India, July 23, 2022 – On the occasion of world environment day, PATA India CHRIST University Student Chapter conducted a seminar based on the 11th and 12th UNWTO sustainable goals. The seminar was based on sustainable cities and communities and responsible production and consumption. Our esteem guests and keynote speakers for the event were Mr. K T Suresh from Ensyde India and Ms. Akanksha Majumder from Goonj. They embraced the seminar with their insightful knowledge and perspective regarding sustainability and how it can be achieved through the UNWTO goals.

The event started with the emcees welcoming the guests and the audience along with our faculties, Dr. Suja Mol John, Dr. Bindi Varghese, and Mr. Nagarjuna G. It was followed by our first speaker, Mr. K T Suresh giving the presentation on the topic. He emphasized the 11th goal, sustainable cities, and communities, and related it with the pre and post-Covid scenario, as well as how we can learn from the past and inculcate the learning in our future. He also discussed the elements to consider while planning to ensure that the changes we desire are achievable. Lastly, he told about the responsible traveler and how change comes from simple measures which can be taken by all.

Our second speaker Ms. Akanksha Majumder from Goonj, gave a really impactful yet simple presentation where she connected the topic with the organization she works for. She spoke about how the work they do at Goonj is highly in relation to sustainability as well as optimal utilization of the resources and making those resources available to the right person at the right time. They have various kinds of projects going on such as ‘Dignity for work’ where they try to make communities self-sufficient. Many of their models connect to the 12th goal, as their main goal is the recycling and up-cycling of clothes which are then provided to the needy.

Together they both shared a lot of issues and solutions which if implemented as planned can create and impact society at a large in an effective way. Their presentations were followed by questions from both our audiences as well as faculty members. The students of tourism were enlightened with quality knowledge and solutions related to sustainability. It was a great learning experience for all.
