OCIT Holds First Marshall Islands Tourism Forum on World Tourism Day

In line with World Tourism Day celebrations, the Office of Commerce, Investment & Tourism (OCIT) held the first Marshall Islands Tourism Forum on September 29, bringing together government agencies, tourism businesses, airlines, regional organizations, development partners, and other tourism stakeholders for a day of collaboration, information-sharing, and discussion on the future of tourism in the Marshall Islands.

The Forum provided an important space to look at where the tourism sector is today, the opportunities ahead, and how stakeholders can work together to build a stronger, more sustainable and connected tourism industry.

The day featured a series of presentations and panel discussions covering key areas of tourism development:

  • National, Regional & International Tourism Updates

Stakeholders shared updates on current tourism initiatives, regional developments, opportunities, and priorities for strengthening the Marshall Islands tourism sector.

  • Regional Promotion & Trade Platforms

The discussion explored regional and international tourism promotion opportunities, upcoming trade platforms and events, target markets, and how organizations can better coordinate their efforts to increase the Marshall Islands’ visibility internationally.

  • Connectivity Updates

Airlines, government partners and aviation stakeholders discussed connectivity challenges and opportunities, including the importance of reliable air access to support tourism, business travel, and movement between the Marshall Islands, neighboring islands and the wider Pacific.

  • Sustainability Plans

The Forum highlighted the importance of developing tourism that protects the Marshall Islands’ environment, culture and communities. Stakeholders discussed practical approaches to sustainable tourism and the need for continued collaboration to build a resilient tourism sector.

  • RMI Sustainable Tourism Excellence Award

The Forum also introduced the RMI Sustainable Tourism Excellence Award, which aims to recognize tourism businesses demonstrating commitment to quality, sustainability, cultural preservation and responsible tourism practices.

The Forum reinforced one important message: the future of tourism in the Marshall Islands depends on collaboration.

By bringing together stakeholders from across the sector, OCIT hopes to continue creating opportunities for dialogue, partnerships, and coordinated action toward a more sustainable and resilient tourism industry.
