Experiencing Ramadan Culture at Bangsar Ramadan Bazaar
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 6 March 2026 – The PATA Malaysia HELP University Student Chapter (PATAMHUSC) organized a cultural visit to the Bangsar Ramadan Bazaar, located along Jalan Telawi 1, Kuala Lumpur. The activity aimed to provide students with the opportunity to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Ramadan while exploring Malaysia’s diverse halal food culture.
Purpose and Participants
The visit was designed to help students experience Hari Raya and Ramadan culture in Malaysia while gaining a deeper understanding of local traditions associated with the fasting month. Students from the School of Hospitality and Tourism participated in the activity, creating a meaningful cultural learning experience outside the classroom.
By visiting the Ramadan bazaar, participants were able to observe how food, culture, and community interactions play an important role during this significant period in Malaysia.
Program Experience
The visit began at 4:00 PM, when members gathered at the Bangsar Ramadan Bazaar. As the bazaar gradually became livelier in the late afternoon, participants explored various stalls selling a wide range of halal food, traditional snacks, desserts, and beverages commonly enjoyed during Ramadan.
Students had the opportunity to try several Malaysian local foods such as lekor, kuih keria, martabak, satay, and tepung pelita. Through this experience, participants discovered that some of these traditional delicacies are especially popular during the Ramadan season and are not commonly available outside this festive period. This allowed students to gain a deeper appreciation of Malaysia’s food culture and understand how certain dishes are closely connected to cultural and religious celebrations.
In addition to enjoying the food, students were able to observe the lively social atmosphere of the bazaar, where families and communities gather to purchase meals for iftar, the breaking of the fast. The colorful stalls, friendly vendors, and festive environment provided participants with an authentic experience of Ramadan in Malaysia.
Outcomes and Takeaways
The visit successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of Malaysia’s multicultural society and the cultural significance of Ramadan. For many students, particularly international participants, the experience offered valuable insights into how religious traditions influence daily life, culinary practices, and community activities.
From a tourism perspective, students also gained awareness of how Ramadan bazaars function as vibrant cultural attractions that draw both locals and visitors. Observing the atmosphere, food offerings, and interactions within the bazaar helped participants recognize the importance of food tourism and cultural experiences in enriching Malaysia’s tourism landscape.
Overall, the activity strengthened cultural awareness among members while encouraging students to appreciate the relationship between tourism, local traditions, and community life.
