PATA Malaysia HELP University Student Chapter PATAMHUSC x HUSRC x ProjekWaste Beach Cleanup Program

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 19th April 2025 – On a bright Saturday morning, 30 passionate student volunteers, accompanied by one club advisor and one representative from Projek Waste, came together at Pantai Remis, Jeram, Selangor for the PATAMHUSC x HUSRC x Projek Waste Beach Cleanup Program. Organized by the PATA Malaysia HELP University Student Chapter (PATAMHUSC) in collaboration with the HELP University Student Representative Council (HUSRC) and Projek Waste, and led by the Chairperson, Izeyan@Izzy, the event ran from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and marked a strong demonstration of youth commitment to environmental sustainability. The initiative was part of PATAMHUSC’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible tourism and environmental stewardship, aligning closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

The Day at a Glance:

Following a quick briefing by Projek Waste, the volunteers equipped themselves with gloves, collection bags, and recording sheets to systematically cover a 1-mile stretch of Pantai Remis. Despite the blazing sun, spirits remained high as participants worked together to remove debris from the shoreline.

Key Achievements:

● Total items collected: 711

● Total weight of waste collected: 40 pounds

● Distance covered: 1 mile

● Common waste types: Single-use plastics, food wrappers, fishing debris, styrofoam

● Largest items found: A motorcycle helmet and a large detergent container

This hands-on experience revealed the hidden severity of marine pollution and the critical need for collective action.

A Contribution to UNSDGs:

The cleanup directly supported several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including:

● Goal 14: Life Below Water – protecting marine ecosystems by removing harmful debris

● Goal 13: Climate Action – contributing to local climate initiatives

● Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – highlighting the impact of waste on the environment

● Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals – exemplifying the power of cross-organizational collaboration

More Than Just Picking Up Trash:

Beyond the cleanup, Projek Waste provided an educational component by sharing valuable insights into waste management, recycling practices, and the broader environmental impacts of improper waste disposal. Volunteers learned practical ways to extend their impact beyond the beach and into their daily lives.

By 11:00 AM, the volunteers had made a visible difference, collecting a substantial amount of waste. After a group debrief and final photo session, everyone departed at 11:30 AM, filled with a sense of pride and motivation to continue championing sustainability.

Acknowledgments:

PATAMHUSC expresses heartfelt thanks to Projek Waste for their leadership and support, HUSRC for their collaboration, and all volunteers who dedicated their morning to making a real difference. Not to forget! HELP University’s Department of Student Affairs (DSA), for their support on this initiative and sponsoring us the drinks.

Looking Forward:

As a proud chapter under the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), PATAMHUSC remains committed to advancing responsible tourism practices and fostering environmentally conscious young leaders. This beach cleanup is only the beginning of many more initiatives aimed at creating lasting, positive change for our environment and our communities. Together, we can protect our shores — one beach at a time
