Awarding & Showcasing Best Practices in Waste Reduction in the Thai Travel and Tourism Industry

Food Waste-Free Champion

Best practice: Sivatel Bangkok Hotel started its food waste reduction initiatives in 2017. First, the hotel began collaborating with local farms to source organic, fresh ingredients and sourcing more frequently to reduce spoilage. Sivatel also created a rooftop garden, where food waste is used as a fertiliser, and implemented a Zero Food Waste Cooking Policy, to maximise the use of all ingredients, such as using bones for making soups and broths. More recently, Sivatel's team started working with black soldier fly worms, extremely efficient and low-impact decomposers of organic waste.

Plastic Waste-Free Champion

Best practice: Seeing the amount of single-use plastics in their operations and the growing negative impact of these materials on the environment, in 2018, Anantara Layan Phuket Resort established a Green Team Committee to develop a zero-plastic strategy. The strategy has led to many impressive results, including the elimination of all single-use plastic straws, stirrers, take-out boxes, toothbrushes, razors, combs and packaging; the replacement of plastic water bottles with refilling stations, glass bottles and reusable cups; and the reduction of plastic waste also in their supply chain.
