Zoo Negara Keeperku Program
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 4th July 2025 – Members of PATA Malaysia HELP University Student Chapter participated in the Keeperku Program at Zoo Negara Malaysia. This unique and immersive experience offered students an opportunity to learn firsthand about wildlife conservation, animal care, and responsible tourism practices.
Hosted by Zoo Negara Malaysia, the Keeperku program is designed to provide participants with a meaningful and educational encounter that goes beyond typical zoo visits. Under the expert guidance of professional zookeepers, PATAMHUSC members spent the day engaging in a variety of hands-on activities that highlighted the dedication, effort, and science involved in maintaining a responsible wildlife facility.
A Day in the Life of a Zookeeper:
The day began early in the morning as our group arrived at Zoo Negara, filled with excitement and curiosity. Briefed by the staff, we were divided into teams and assigned to different zones within the zoo — each offering unique insights into the lives of animals and their caretakers.
● Preparing and feeding meals for animals
● Cleaning enclosures and assisting with habitat maintenance
● Observing animal behavior and enrichment exercises
● Learning about conservation efforts and biodiversity protection
This comprehensive exposure allowed students to not only appreciate the physical demands of being a zookeeper but also understand the broader ecological and ethical responsibilities tied to wildlife management and tourism.
Acknowledgments:
PATAMHUSC expresses heartfelt thanks to Zoo Negara Malaysia for welcoming us and providing such a transformative experience. We would also like to thank our faculty advisors, and a special thanks to the zookeepers and staff who shared their expertise and time — your passion and dedication truly made the day unforgettable.
Looking Forward:
This program has inspired our chapter to explore more partnerships with organizations that promote environmental education, conservation, and sustainable tourism. We hope to organize similar events in the future, including eco-tours, conservation workshops, and collaborations with other PATA Student Chapters across the region.
