What We Did

5 members of the PATA MHUSC assembled at 9:00 AM inside the main entrance to Bukit Gasing for a quick safety briefing and warm-up. We were tracking along the forest education (Hutan Pendidikan) trail network, which made us pause to learn about the importance of vegetation and stop to listen for bird calls, or apply some doses of mindful hiking.

Halfway through, we glided over the suspension bridge and pressed on for the lookout. At one point, a troop of monkeys emerged playful but serene. Our hike leaders gave gentle guidance for respecting the flora and fauna observance without feeding or approaching. Towards the end of the ascent, a few friendly hikers we passed from the area gave us some useful path recommendations that led to quick progress to its top.

By 10:21 am we were on the summit and did a fast group photo, downed some water, reviewed LNT principles and headed back down. The team was back at the trailhead by 10:50 am.

Learning & Sustainability

It was an educational adventure in miniature: participants received a live lesson on urban biodiversity, trail etiquette, and risk management (including water intake, pacing oneself, and footing on uneven surfaces). The squad also adhered to PATA’s motto of environmentally sensitive travel, taking all waste out with them and keeping noise and disruption to wildlife to a minimum.

Safety & Inclusivity

Pre-Hike Rundown: the path, buddy’s check, and how to behave around wildlife

We kept everyone happy: regroup points on the flat sections for all.

Readiness: Water, light snacks and basic first aid readily available.

Acknowledgments:

PATAMHUSC expresses heartfelt thanks to all the participants. We would also like to thank our faculty advisors, and a special thanks to the people who shared their expertise and time to help and teach us the technique of hiking.

Looking Forward:

This program has inspired our chapter to explore more partnerships with organizations that promote environmental education, conservation, and sustainable tourism. We hope to organize similar events in the future, including eco-tours, conservation workshops, and collaborations with other PATA Student Chapters across the region.
